I have received a letter from Scott & Co telling me they i owe £543.29 for council tax but i know i don’t owe that much. Can they chase me and add fees if i don’t owe the money?

    Hi Sarah,

Do you believe you owe anything towards your council tax and if so how much? For the amount you’re disputing i would suggest contacting Scott & Co for more information about the debt. Try and find out when the debt occurred, which property it is from and why you didn’t find out about it until now.

    Hi,

Sorry for the late update but i contacted the bailiffs and they told me i owed it from an old property i no longer live in. I do owe about £200 from my current property but the one they are chasing me for, i definitely don’t owe anything. The bailiffs are still saying i owe the money even though i didn’t stay there during the period they claim, do i have to pay it?

Unfortunately if you moved out without informing the council then you will still be liable to pay the council tax.

The only option would be to call your local council tax office and tell them you moved and have been paying elsewhere but they aren’t obligated to cancel the debt.

That seems a little unfair but i guess there’s not much i can do then, i’ll call my council office and hopefull common sense will prevail.

    Hi,

I called my council tax office today and they informed me they are not willing or able to help me and said i just had to set an arrangement with Scott & Co.

I don’t think this is fair but i guess there’s nothing else i can do but pay it.

Thanks for all the advice and help.

    Hi Sarah,

Unfortunately i’ve spoken to a lot of people who have had the same problem. There seems to be lack of information about the importance of informing councils about moving home.

Your best option at this stage would be to set an affordable arrangement with Scott & Co to repay the debt.
